PRESS RELEASE
This Thursday 3rd of April took place the first demonstration against tourism in Barcelona. This demonstration comes two weeks after a massive march in Mallorca, where 50,000 people showed their discontent with mass tourism (http://www.diariodemallorca.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pRef76_2_250110__mallorca-protesta-contra-turistas). This time just a few dozens of neighbours from Raval (the city center of Barcelona) expressed their disagreement with the excessive touristic exploitation in the city. This group of people is aware that in Barcelona many people bears with noise, litter and further inconveniences because of the cheap flights that come from all over Europe. “It is time to find an alternative economic model to the tourism of sun, sangria and paella”, one demonstrator declared. The demonstration followed its route in a festive mood and avoided confrontation with the many tourists who strolled leisurely in Las Ramblas. Some of the demonstration slogans were “Yes to immigration, no to tourism”, “Trees not tourists”, “No to loud, lousy, tacky English tourists” and “No more Mexican hats”. This last slogan refers to tourists who buy huge Mexican hats in souvenir shops, ignoring that these are not Spanish at all.
